Gainesville Detailing often asks its customers if they have heard of a claybar treatment. In Gainesville, Florida most people have either not heard of a claybar or they know very little at best. I am going to try to lay out the reasons one is used and what kind of benefits one can reasonably expect. The usual response I get to the aforementioned question is what is a claybar. To put it simply…it’s a piece of clay. One might be wondering how a piece of clay could help out a vehicles paint. The truth is in the pudding, or this time the clay. When used properly the detailing clay will remove most foreign particles that are bonded to a vehicles paint.

The type of contaminants on any given vehicles surface depends on the environment it is exposed to on a regular basis. The most common items removed from a vehicles paint after a claybar treatment in Gainesville are rail dust, acid rain fallout, lovebugs, tar, sap, and overspray. All of these agents if left on the paint for any extended period of time will cause damage. The only way to prevent damage is through proper vehicle care and maintenance. The way that the claybar works is by “grabbing” the bonded pieces and pulling it our of the clearcoat and paint that it has found a home in. Now you are beginning to see the value of having lovebugs removed in Gainesville with a claybar treatment. How can you tell when a painted surface needs to have a claybar treatment? Texture, its all about texture.

After washing your vehicle and thoroughly drying it, take the time to run your hand across and feel the surface. Does it feel silky smooth? Does it feel like sandpaper? If the later is what you are feeling then it is time for a claybar treatment. Washing and waxing alone will not keep things from bonding to the paint. Every so often, usually once a year, it is required to strip all of the wax off and perform a claybar treatment to restore the paint to its original clean state. All vehicles that receive a claybar treatment must get waxed, no exceptions.

Today i had the opportunity of detailing a Chevy HHR. These vehicles are kind of funny looking to me. I believe it was a remake of an older version or something. The vehicle has a dark blue paint with metallic flecks in it. The paint was not in too good of shape. After washing it really good with the two bucket wash method I gave it a clay treatment. Here is a picture of what the clay looked like after a few passes in a two by two foot section on the hood. Needless to say this vehicle needed paint cleaning really bad. All I was going to do today though was wash, clay, and polish then wax. All of these steps were done by hand. It is going to need some paint correction with a machine, but for now it needed these hand steps at the least.

This paint was thoroughly covered with tree sap due to its location in the parking lot. No worry I just kept working one section at a time. Each time I was finished with a section I kneeded the clay bar until it exposed some fresh clay. It took the better part of an hour to do which is very long for claying a vehicle. Well after getting it completely clayed I applied some zanio polish to it. I finished it off with some Mother’s pure caranuaba wax and it shined up really nice. This vehicle will still need to get some paint correction done in the future. You can see how well it shined up from this picture below.
