First things first! You need to figure out what your website will be about. A successful website must have a determined niche in my opinion. It does not matter what this niche is, it can be anything that you want it to be. This makes picking one easy. Try to go with something that you actually know something about. Knowing what your talking about will come across in any content that you have on your website. A website will not become successful if you have half-rate content. The internet is full of sites that have half-rate content. Balkhis has an article on why a niche blog is better than a nicheless one. Now we have a niche established. With a niche website you will be able to successfully target your audience. Here is an example of a couple good niche websites.

Secondly we want to come up with a domain name. Having some good keywords within your domain is a great idea but try not to make it long winded. Along with good keywords in the domain name a successful website will have something that is easily branded. What do I mean by having a website that is easily branded? Well something that would be easily successful when branded is something that is catchy and easy to remember. I already know that your thinking this may be hard. Well coming up with a successful website name is extremely hard. One of the main reason is, it’s just plain hard. That’s about as simple as it gets. Finding a name in your niche with good keywords that is easy to brand and not to long winded is difficult. Let’s not forget that there are millions upon millions of website names that are already taken. This is where you get all happy because I remind you that these are just guidelines to go by. Say for instance you think you have a really catchy website name but its slacking a little on the keyword, it’s ok. Life is all about compromises and so is a good web strategy. Chances are your first choice will be taken. Even if it is taken you could try Sedo to see if it is for sale. This process of brainstorming and eliminating can be tedious and long. Don’t just settle for any name. I have found out in previous experience that settling for a name you don’t particularly like can affect your poorformance. That’s not a typo, I spelled it that way to make a point. If you are not passionate about your name/brand then you will not blog as passionately. A successful website and blog should be run by someone who is passionate about the content being provided. Some tools to help you while you are trying to determine a name are.
